Nicole Matsalla

Nicole believes culture has a powerful way of building, connecting, uniting, empowering, and strengthening communities. As a SaskCulture Board member, Nicole enjoys sharing her passion for and promoting multiculturalism, as well as aiding the Saskatchewan cultural community in its promotion and endeavours.

For the past five years, Nicole has shared her ethnic Ukrainian culture with local and global audiences vis-à-vis her role as a Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble (PFE) dancer. Additionally, she has enjoyed dance instruction roles with various clubs in and around Saskatoon, where she has loved sharing her passion and culture with younger generations! Nicole has also had the privilege of serving on PFE’s executive board as a Fundraising Coordinator, where she focused on relationship and partnership development with other cultural and community organizations. With that, she recently received the David Mysak Future Leaders Award, as presented by both the Shevchenko Foundation and Ukrainian Canadian Business Professionals Association.

In spring 2018, Nicole convocated from the University of Saskatchewan - Edwards School of Business - with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and global business designation. As a Human Resources major with an emphasis on international relations, her interests surround the ‘people aspect’ of business, as well as foreign language and cultural studies. She is excited to further bridge these interests in a Masters program at the University of Saskatchewan.

As part of her undergraduate program, Nicole had an amazing opportunity to participate in unique experiential learning course - the Governance and Leadership Development Practicum. She was placed on the Friends of the Broadway Theatre Board for eight months, where she learned in a practical, handson setting what it means for an Arts and Culture organization to be the nucleus of a community, as well as strong leadership and high-level, strategic governance practices. This practicum expanded her knowledge in all areas of non-profit governance – from finance and auditing to board recruitment and performance appraisals.

In her spare time, Nicole volunteers as a mentor and academic tutor with Saskatoon Open Door Society’s Youth Study Group program. Additionally, she loves to bake, travel, and spend time with friends and family. She was elected to the SaskCulture Board of Directors in 2018.
