Social & Cultural Development Assistant

Note, this is a casual position for up to twelve (12) months.

This position performs technical and administrative work assisting in a variety of City programs and projects that support heritage preservation, affordable housing, cultural development and social inclusion. The work involves the performance of diverse office and field assignments in assisting professional planning and social development personnel in various aspects of research, documentation and administration. This position reports to a Senior City Planner, Social and Cultural Development, and is under close supervision.

Typical Duties include:

Check and proofread various types of material for accuracy and/or compliance with corporate standards.
May be required to record, prepare and distribute agendas and minutes of meetings.
Collect and organize specific data related to housing, heritage conservation, cultural and social development including the preparation of maps, application forms, community surveys and promotional material.
Research information and data on a variety of topics by contacting individuals, other levels of governments, libraries and institutions by reviewing files, periodical and other sources.
Document and refine procedure within the Social and Cultural Development Branch.
Maintain computer database files regarding housing, heritage conservation, cultural and social development policies and initiatives.
Assist senior staff in researching and responding to housing, social and cultural inquiries.
Assist senior staff with the processing of affordable housing and heritage property incentive applications.
Make site inspections to secure information for reports and applications on various social and cultural projects.
Assists in the planning and organization of public engagement sessions.
Prepare correspondence and reports as required on assigned projects.
Prepare purchase authorizations as required.
Perform related work as required.
Candidates will be screened on the following criteria:

Typically, the knowledge, skills and abilities obtained through a two (2) year diploma in an program related to social and cultural development (e.g. Fine Arts, Social Work, Urban Planning, Public Administration) with one (1) year of administrative experience.

Familiarity with social and cultural development including related technical terminology, practices and techniques.
Knowledge of statistical applications.
Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
Interpret, apply and explain established policies and procedures
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations.
Ability to handle sensitive information with high level of confidentiality and discretion
Demonstrated research and writing skills
Considerable knowledge of current word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and database software applications.
Ability to interpret maps for the purpose of communicating information and responding to service requests

Salary: $21.09 - $25.25/Hour; $40,210 - $48,142/Annum (2021 Rates)
