Deadline

April 17, 2023

Heritage Saskatchewan seeks a student to be a full-time research assistant to conduct a survey to document extant wooden grain elevators in Saskatchewan and produce a report based on the results of the survey. Wooden grain elevators were a key component of early twentieth century communities in Saskatchewan and were integrated into the province's agricultural identity. As technology and transportation changed, wooden grain elevators were gradually abandoned (with many torn down). While there has been much media attention to grain elevators, there has been little research done into the current state of these symbolic structures in Saskatchewan. The duties of this position would be to conduct a survey of existing buildings (using both documentation conducted by others and collecting one's own documentation by travelling in the province), research the history of wooden grain elevators and how they are currently perceived by various groups in Saskatchewan, and prepare a report compiling these research findings. This position would be thirty-five (35) hours per week for sixteen (16) weeks and will be mainly done remotely.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills in English (other languages would be an asset but not required); be comfortable with working independently; and possess an ability to represent our organisation in a professional manner. Prior experience in a heritage-related field would be an asset; other backgrounds that would be an asset would be Communications, Journalism, Library & Information Science, or another Liberal Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences program. As an organisation that values diversity, we support and encourage students from diverse cultural backgrounds to apply. As the successful candidate will be working both in the office and remotely, a personal computer and access to an internet connection are required. As this position will require some travel, a valid driver's licence is also required.

Timeframe: May 8, 2023 to August 31, 2023 (totalling 17 weeks) at 35 hrs/wk
Wages: $10,710.00 ($18.00/hr x 35hrs/wk x 17 wks); Heritage Saskatchewan will cover mandatory costs such as Worker's Compensation, CPP, etc. Heritage Saskatchewan will also offer financial contribution toward Internet and cellphone expenses of the successful applicant during the 18-week timeframe.
Location: The student will work remotely in association with the Heritage Saskatchewan office, which is located in Regina. This position will also require some travel within southern Saskatchewan.
Application deadline: April 17, 2023

*Note: Due to funding requirements through Young Canada Works, only applicants who are under 30 years of age [born after August 31, 1993] will be considered.
