The Estevan Art Gallery and Museum (“EAGM”) invites applications for our Director/Curator position.
The EAGM is a place for people, ideas and experiences. The Gallery and Museum plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the region’s arts and culture. The Director/Curator is tasked with setting and executing the artistic and cultural message of the EAGM for South East Saskatchewan residents within the parameters of the EAGM Vision, Mission Statement and Strategic Plan. The Director/Curator of the EAGM has the unique opportunity to place a key role in messaging arts and culture for Estevan and area.
The Director/Curator will have an important leadership role within the EAGM. Under the direction of, and reporting to, the Board of Directors of the EAGM, the Director/Curator as Chief Executive Officer, manages all operations of the EAGM in accordance with established policies with an objective to achieving the following outcomes:
- Offer programs and services that are meaningful and relevant that:
o engage the broader public; and/or
o challenge and inspire; and/or
o provide artists with opportunities to engage and develop their work.
- Maintain healthy and growing financial resources;
- Maintain healthy and growing human resources; and
- Engender a sense of pride and commitment to the EAGM by citizens of southeast Saskatchewan.
The specific portfolio of the Director/Curator will include, but may not be limited to:
- Exhibitions: Planning and delivery of an exhibition program plan for the EAGM’s gallery and museum spaces, collaborate with artists and/or organizations to curate a number of exhibitions throughout the calendar year.
- Collections: Maintain relationships with the city of Estevan and other donors, oversee the care of the Andrew King Collection, NWMP collection and any other donated collections or pieces, research permanent collections, as needed.
- Leadership: Support and oversee the Education, Outreach and Program Coordinator along with any other support staff to ensure their programming is executed in accordance with their plans and the EAGM mandate and policies. Develop measurable goals and outcomes, act as an advocate for visual arts and culture within the community, and represent the Gallery at public functions.
- Human Resources: Manage a team of staff, contractors, and inters, and provide overall leadership to promote a positive work environment. Advise and engage the Board of Directors, when necessary, on staffing and personnel management.
- Administration: Formalize monthly reports to the Board of Directors, annual budgets to the City of Estevan for funding applications, and secure grant funding from various supporting arts and culture entities.
The Ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:
- An M.F.A. or equivalent training related to the visual arts and history;
- Superior expertise in English language proficiency;
- Two years of directly related experience in a gallery or museum setting;
- Directly related experience in administrative management;
- Excellent managerial, interpersonal, financial and organizational skills.
- An excellent ability to problem solve, make decisions, and execute action plans to complete tasks; and
- Experience in the government/community grant application drafting process. The ability to point to previous successful grant applications is of significant value.
- Commitment to the values of diversity, inclusion, and public-centered engagement strategies.
The position being offered is a full-time, permanent, salaried position. The general hours of work would run Monday-Friday during gallery business hours but will periodically include hours outside the traditional business day to allow for meetings, events, and installations. Must have the ability to work after hours and on weekends, as needed.
