The Indigenous Education Gallery Intern is a new internship position designed to support the Mann Art Gallery in maintaining and increasing opportunities for Indigenous engagement, content, and culturally relevant learning strategies in our public programs that serve over 4,000 participants annually. The intern will lead public programs, assist the Gallery Educator to continue to identify and increase communication with local and regional Indigenous groups and schools, and assess and strategize how the gallery can better serve and assist groups in accessing relevant visual arts education opportunities. The intern will also design their own outreach art project and develop an Indigenous Youth Summer Art Workshop (IYSAW) to occur in summer 2019. Finally, the intern will promote and disseminate information about Indigenous artists and artworks in the gallery’s Permanent Collection of art.

This position begins on Tuesday September 4th 2018 and ends on Friday March 8th 2019. The work week is 35 hours and typically occurs from Monday through Friday, but some evening and weekend work is required. A banked overtime system is in place. The Indigenous Education Gallery intern reports directly to the Gallery Educator and indirectly to the Director/Curator.

Wage: $16.00/hour


DUTIES:
The intern will achieve the objectives in three project areas through the following duties:
1. Maintain and expand existing programs:
a. Assist the Gallery Educator to continue to identify and increase communication with local and regional Indigenous groups and schools, especially groups that have had little or no participation in gallery programming in the past 5 years;
b. Contact Indigenous groups to determine how the MAG may better serve and assist these groups in accessing relevant visual arts education opportunities offered by the MAG as well as in the wider community;
c. Assist the Gallery Educator in designing and leading the following existing programs: Gallery Tour + Activity Programs (school and community groups), School Outreach, Seniors Art Outreach (delivered monthly in long term care homes), Accessibility Program: Self-Help Group SHARE, Free Family Art Drop-In events, and assisting at artist-lead Professional Development Workshops;
d. In particular, assist in designing and leading the Gallery Tour + Activity Program for pre-k to post-secondary students for the exhibition Catherine Blackburn: New Age Warriors, and the accompanying artist-lead workshop;
e. Assist in increasing and enhancing Indigenous content, teaching/learning traditions, and cultural relevancy in these programs using their own knowledge, experiences, research, particular areas of study or interest, etc;
f. Sit on and attend regular meetings of the City of Prince Albert Municipal Cultural Action Plan (MCAP) committee and the Indigenous Arts & Culture Coalition committee, and use these opportunities to suggest and advocate for Indigenous arts & culture programs and strategies at the municipal and regional level.

2. Plan the IYSAW Summer 2019 project:
a. Review previous program delivered in 2014-16, and the Cree Summer Language & Culture Camp of summer 2018;
b. Meet and work with partners and community leaders to determine the type of workshop or camp to be delivered in 2019;
c. Secure facilitators, artists, and locations. There is a possibility for Intern to be one of the workshop facilitators in summer 2019 for continued experience and income;
d. Write two grant applications to support this project. The intern will research and identify the most appropriate grants, and determine camp objectives, participants, leaders, location, and complete budget of income and expenses.

3. Promote Indigenous artists and artworks in the Permanent Collection
a. Review the report on Indigenous artists and artworks in the MAG permanent collection created by the 2017-18 Indigenous Gallery Education Intern;
b. Discuss Permanent Collection artworks chosen by the Registrar and, if approved for funding, the Permanent Collection Intern, as they create the VMC Virtual Exhibition (VE);
c. Develop interpretive and educational material to accompany this VE. Promote it to teachers, etc.;
d. Lead gallery programs with Indigenous works in the Collection;
e. Undertake further research on Collection artists and works as opportunities arise and new works by Indigenous artists are acquired.

Additional tasks related to the above areas include attending committee meetings, creating monthly progress reports for the Board of Directors, creating promotional materials (text, flyers, posters, social media posts) as needed, and addressing queries on public programs and the Permanent Collection.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate self-identified as Indigenous, ideally from one of the nations represented in the Prince Albert area (Cree, Dene, Dakota, or Metis). Cree or Dene language skills would be an asset but are not required. The candidate has experience working with Elders, traditional knowledge keepers, and Indigenous groups in urban and rural environments.
They will have graduated with (at minimum) a bachelor’s degree in the past 24 months, preferably in the field of Visual Arts, Art History, Indigenous/Native Studies, Education (with teachable subjects in art, history, or social studies); or a diploma or degree in a related field such as social work, community outreach, recreation program coordinator, or community/social support. Knowledge of both contemporary and historical art, art processes, and techniques is an asset. The candidate should be organized and able to work with people of varying ages, cultural backgrounds, and physical and intellectual abilities. It is crucial that the candidate works well both independently and as part of a team, and is confident in leading large and small group activities. The candidate possesses excellent communication and writing skills (grant writing is required) and has knowledge of Windows computer systems, word processing, and photo editing software. A valid SK driver’s license is required; access to a vehicle is ideal. Finally, the candidate must complete a Criminal Records Vulnerable Sector Check. Existence of a criminal record may not prevent the candidate from employability if they are able to pass the Vulnerable Sector Check.
This internship is funded by Young Canada Works. As such, the successful candidate must:
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada. Non-Canadian students or graduates holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible;
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
• Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• Be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• Not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW;
• Be unemployed or underemployed college or university graduate, that is, not employed full-time;
• Be a recent graduate who has graduated from college or university within the last 24 months at the start of employment;
• Not be receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with YCW;
• Have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy.
