The City of Yorkton requires a university arts graduate for a temporary position as an Archives Intern. Working under the supervision of the Heritage Researcher, the Archives Intern will spend the majority of their time sorting, documenting (data management), digitizing and transcribing existing audio interviews within the City of Yorkton’s archival collections. Associated information will be entered and organized within a central archival database (cataloguing). The Archives Intern will use a relational approach to cataloguing, describing relationships between different record-types and constructing hierarchical relationships for more complex collections. Additional potential interviews may be developed and conducted with guidance from an Advisory Committee. This will be an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop key skills for advancement in a professional career, including time management, project management, and communication, working collaboratively with heritage and information professionals and interacting with stakeholders.

The ideal candidate is a recent graduate from a post-secondary institution with a strong arts background, preferably in history, archives study, library science or urban planning, who possesses:
• Post-secondary arts degree
• Attention to details and exhibit quality workmanship in materials production.
• Critical thinking and writing skills.
• Good IT skills with a knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
• Legible printing and writing
• Research, writing, and customer service experience
• Excellent communication, information management and public speaking skills
• A willingness to work with the public and volunteers
• An eagerness to learn
• The ability to lift and carry at least 30 pounds
• The ability to follow established procedures and data entry standards
• No significant allergies to dust or mould which cannot be mitigated
Any previous work or experience with archives, libraries, or museums will be considered an asset.
Candidate must be a recent post-secondary graduate, under 30 years of age and must be registered with the Young Canada Works Candidate Inventory. The Candidate must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada and legally entitled to work in Canada. The Candidate will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program; are unemployed or underemployed; are a college or university graduate; are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program; and have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.
