We, at SaskCulture, believe that cultural celebrations must be safe spaces, places where people can come together to learn, connect, and share pride in who they are. Events such as the Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver are important opportunities to celebrate heritage, build community, and deepen our understanding of the diverse cultures in our communities. They should always be moments of joy, belonging, and unity.
The senseless act of violence that occurred during the Lapu-Lapu Festival is heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, the Filipino Canadian communities across Canada and in Saskatchewan, and all those affected by this tragedy. No one should have to fear for their safety when celebrating their culture.
SaskCulture remains committed to supporting inclusive, respectful spaces where all cultures are celebrated, and people feel they belong. Together, we can create communities where arts, heritage and cultural experiences continue to be a source of strength, connection, and healing.
