The Strata Festival of New Music

The Strata Festival of New Music is proud to announce its return for 2024, unveiling an exciting lineup featuring an array of innovative and boundary-pushing composers from Saskatchewan and beyond. Mark your calendars for June 13th to 15th as the festival takes place at various venues across Saskatoon, including Remai Modern, Quance Theatre at the U of S, and Knox United Church.
Celebrating 12 years, the Strata Festival continues its tradition of spotlighting Saskatchewan-based composers and musicians, presenting cutting-edge new music that pushes artistic boundaries. This year's festival promises an exhilarating three days of concerts, masterclasses, and workshops featuring a diverse range of composers and performers exploring various genres and styles.
Highlights of the festival include:

#1: Famous Last Words presents Guest Composer Rodney Sharman's renowned music, featuring the Strata Ensemble at Remai Modern on Thursday, June 13th, 2024, 7:30 PM. In collaboration with OUT Saskatoon, experience the exquisite Riverview Room performance of Sharman's compositions, including a premiere by an emerging Saskatchewan composer. Additionally, enjoy a piece by American Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Raven Chacon.

#2: High Score: A Multiplayer Jazz Experience at Quance Theatre, University of Saskatchewan, on Friday, June 14th, 2024, 7:30 PM, introduces an innovative collaboration between local video game creators and composers. Experience live performances of original compositions by a chamber jazz ensemble synchronised with gameplay projected on a large screen.


#3: Rumble in the Knox brings together the lowest acoustic instruments in Saskatchewan at Knox United Church on Saturday, June 15th, 2024, 7:30 PM. Experience unique compositions crafted by Saskatchewan composers for an extraordinary ensemble, offering audiences a sonic journey within the majestic confines of the church.


#4: Young Composer Workshop & Masterclass with Rodney Sharman takes place at Quance Theatre, University of Saskatchewan, on Friday, June 14th, 2024, 4:00 PM. Led by guest composer Rodney Sharman, this workshop offers invaluable insights and mentorship to emerging talents, showcasing the works of young composers performed by professional musicians in front of peers and the public.
