Paths Home: Stories and Lessons from Repatriation Work
This presentation will talk about repatriation and the rights of Indigenous Nations to bring home their cultural belongings.
Museums across Canada are beginning to recognize their responsibility to return them to their home communities.
The presentation will explain how Indigenous rights holders can work with museums to return belongings and what responsibilities museums have in this process.
Stephanie will share experiences from more than ten years of supporting repatriation work with the Whitecap Dakota Nation, including successful returns of sacred belongings from museums and private collections.
She will also share new repatriation standards developed by the Canadian Museums Association that encourage museums to respect Indigenous authority and follow the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
