DEI Principles Embedded in Fundraising
This session will focus on how equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles show up in practical fundraising work, beyond surface-level statements or policies.
A key focus will be shifting from reactive to proactive approaches. This includes asking teams, donors, and partners about accessibility needs early, offering support before it has to be requested, and building systems and strategies that are inclusive from the foundation rather than treated as a last-minute add-on or checklist item.
We’ll explore how this shows up across core fundraising functions such as grant writing, donor communications, and fund development strategy, including:
- how to design fundraising approaches that are accessible and aligned from the start
- how to communicate impact in a way that is ethical, respectful, and inclusive
- where organizations unintentionally create barriers in their fundraising practices
- how small and mid-sized organizations can apply these principles without adding unnecessary complexity
Facilitator Context:
This session is grounded in Advocate Fundraising’s approach to ethical, inclusive fund development. Through work with non-profits across Canada and diverse communities, this perspective is shaped by both professional practice and lived experience, including disability, cultural identity, and community-based advocacy. The focus is not theoretical — it is rooted in what actually works in real-world fundraising environments.
The goal is to provide a practical, grounded approach to integrating DEI into fundraising in a way that is sustainable and aligned with organizational values.
