Threads Become Petals: A Contemporary Petrykivka Tribute to Family, Heritage and Belonging

The works in this exhibition -Show and Sale- draw upon Petrykivka painting, a distinctive Ukrainian folk-art tradition celebrated for its vibrant flowers, flowing forms, and deep connection to the natural world. Alongside Petrykivka motifs, the artist has incorporated influences from Ukrainian embroidery, family history, birds, kalyna berries, and decorative household objects. Together, these elements create a visual language through which stories of identity, resilience, remembrance, and belonging can be shared.

The artist, Dawna Hawrysh is a Canadian of Ukrainian descent, born in Regina, now living in Calgary. Her work is inspired by her family history and traditions. She incorporates the stories, symbols and memories that connect generations.

In 2013, Petrykivka painting was recognized by its inclusion in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, with the definition "Petrykivka decorative painting as a phenomenon of the Ukrainian ornamental art."
