The Art of (re)Conciliation: A Workshop with Holly Rae Yuzicapi - REGINA BEACH

Join the Prairie Central District, and the Last Mountain Lake Cultural Centre as we host an important workshop with Common Weal Community Arts in part of their Respond to Racism Program.

In this full-day workshop, Holly will guide participants through an educational “culture conversation” and discussion of residential schools in Canada, followed by the creation of a reflective artwork. The conversation will support understanding of how residential schools have impacted the cultures of Indigenous people, and participants will examine the 94 Calls to Action as presented in the 2015 TRC report, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Reflecting on the discussion, participants will then use their understanding of the 94 Calls to Action and the UNDRIP to create an artwork that explores their personal connection to reconciliation. Participants will learn a beading technique and use paints to embellish leather prepared with image transfers. Participants will also learn about topics such as respectful representation of cultures and cultural appropriation.

Holly Rae Yuzicapi is a proud Dakota/Lakota woman from the Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation in southern Saskatchewan. She is an instructor of cultural arts, traditional food, and traditional games, facilitating workshops for all ages throughout Canada and the United States. She has a strong belief that traditional art and cultural experiences can share the history of First Nations people and believes art can create a strong sense of identity and confidence for everyone.
Holly also believes that creating unique common cultural sharing opportunities will help create a strong foundation for building relationships. By providing First Nation influenced learning opportunities to school, Holly hopes to help influence the perspective people have of First Nation history in Canada. Understanding how to respect traditional knowledge is very important to Holly, and she encourages positive cultural discussions amongst all people and all ages to ignite the spirit of reconciliation.
