Folk Imaginaries: Ukrainian Clothing as Memory and Imagination

Folk Imaginaries is a major exhibition at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada that explores the rich history and global influence of Ukrainian clothing. Blending practicality with beauty, traditional Ukrainian dress evolved through centuries of local craftsmanship and international influence. In the early 20th century, these garments inspired European fashion houses and continue to influence global fashion today. The exhibition showcases over 12,000 textiles, rare historical pieces, and contemporary designs by major designers such as Alexander McQueen, Dior, and Valentino. Curated by Natalka Chomiak with support from Alexandra Shkandrij and Rachel Ormshaw, the exhibition presents clothing as a dynamic reflection of memory, migration, and creative expression.
