Studies in Description
Studies in Description is an exhibition of linocut prints and ceramics drawn from the Picasso collection. Featuring depictions of everyday objects and domestic interiors, the selection of works is inspired by the writing of Gertrude Stein, the enigmatic figure and influential art collector who played a central role in the burgeoning modern art scene in Paris during the early 20th century.
An early supporter of Pablo Picasso, Stein’s patronage and friendship were critical to the development of his career. They formed a deep relationship around their respective work in the literary avant-garde and Cubism. With bold forays into abstraction, their work broke with traditional modes of representation to create new expressive forms.
Stein’s 1914 book of poetry, Tender Buttons, is widely considered to be a foundational work of modern literature. Organized into categories, Objects, Food, and Rooms, her experimental writing addresses everyday objects, rendering once familiar subjects strange. Studies in Description adopts the structure of her book as the organizing principle for a selection of Picasso artworks that feature everyday objects, still life arrangements and domestic interiors.
