Threads That Hold the World: Ukrainian Weaving from Homeland to Diaspora
Weaving has shaped Ukrainian life for centuries, carrying practical, artistic, and cultural meaning through clothing, household furnishings, and ceremonial textiles.
As the Ukrainian Museum of Canada’s major exhibition for 2026–27, Threads That Hold the World explores the history and enduring legacy of Ukrainian weaving in the homeland and Canadian diaspora. Curated by Rachel Ormshaw, the exhibition features more than 100 objects from the nineteenth century to the present, drawn from the Museum’s collection alongside loans from museums, private lenders, and contemporary artists.
The exhibition celebrates the diversity of Ukraine’s regional weaving traditions and their continuation and transformation in Canada. It highlights influential weavers and cultural leaders including Daria Yanda, Rose Dragan, Carole Romanyk, and Elizabeth Holinaty.
Contemporary works, including loom-beaded scarves by Speplól Tanya Zilinski, expand the story through connections between Ukrainian and Indigenous textile traditions, cultural identity, and knowledge passed between generations.
Together, these works connect homeland and diaspora, past and present, through the enduring threads of tradition.
