The Fashion Show
The Fashion Show highlights the political and communicative nature of clothing as contemporary art. Clothing is not merely an adornment; it is an extension of the self–a second skin through which we signal our identity, our desires, and our sense of belonging.
Clothing intimately envelops our bodies to shelter and comfort, while sustaining us through daily contact with beauty. In contrast to the exploitative, harmful modes of fast fashion, artists have invested every stitch with care to heal both the wearer and the maker.
Upcycling careworn domestic textiles into enchanting ensembles, Lisa Wicklund weaves together her childhood imaginings of distant glamour and the comforting shelter of her childhood bedroom.
Few fashion statements are as iconic and heavy-handed as the MAGA trucker hat; Geanna Rae inverts, perverts and subverts this symbol of divisive politics by emblazoning her garments with messages that affirm Indigenous identity and advocate for land rights.
David Le’s size-inclusive, hand-printed garments mix gender and cultural signifiers of colonization, while Jason Baerg’s collections draw on natural cycles and propose fashion as a way to activate our bodies as spaces for ceremony.
