Government House is seeking a dynamic, strategic leader for the position of Assistant Manager. In this role, you will use your management experience and understanding of museums to assist with the oversight of all major museum functions. You will lead staff and manage departmental activities, including temporary and permanent exhibitions and their interpretation, as well as collections management, care, and interpretation. This position is responsible for developing, interpreting, and reviewing business lines associated with Government House management, while building and maintaining strong, positive working relationships with tenants and users of Government House. All of these activities aim to fulfill and promote the Government House mandate, goals, and objectives.
The successful candidate will possess strong verbal and written communication skills and have experience working with both government and private sectors. Typically, candidates will have experience in general museum or heritage property management, a certificate or diploma in a museum studies program, or a combination of related experience and education. An in-depth knowledge and understanding of government structure will be considered an asset.
Key responsibilities include ensuring operational efficiency and strategic alignment of the exhibit and collections department with Government House’s mission; supporting the development of accurate and engaging interpretive materials and responding to public and institutional inquiries; preserving and managing the Government House collection in accordance with professional standards and legal requirements; and developing and maintaining exhibitions that are mission-driven, engaging, and educational, including in-house and community exhibits. You will also enhance public outreach through digital platforms and support communication strategies, secure and manage external funding to support strategic initiatives, and oversee staff funded through these partnerships. Additionally, you will provide continuity in leadership by assuming managerial responsibilities during the Manager’s absence.
To succeed in this role, you will bring knowledge of museum practices, including collections management, exhibit development, and preservation standards; familiarity with government structure and inter-agency collaboration; and an understanding of the heritage and cultural sector, including provincial and national museum networks and heritage organizations. Knowledge of environmental controls such as temperature, humidity, and lighting standards is also important. Education requirements include a certificate or diploma in Museum Studies or a related field, or a combination of relevant education and experience. You should also have demonstrated experience in museum or heritage property management, including staff supervision and strategic planning.
You will have the ability to lead teams, manage projects, and assume managerial duties when required; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing for internal coordination and public engagement; align departmental activities with organizational goals and contribute to long-term planning; enhance public outreach through digital platforms; identify funding opportunities and manage grant-related projects; and conduct and coordinate research to produce interpretive content.
