Cultural Program & Gift Shop Assistant

The Cultural Program & Gift Shop Assistant is a two-fold position. In the mornings, the employee will assist with the planning and delivery of the Summer Art & Culture Camps, and in the afternoons, they will work in the Gift Shop as a clerk. This position is a Tuesday through Saturday position.
Required Education and Experience: Undergraduate College or University student in history, education, art, or a field of study related to multiculturalism, and experience or interest working with children and youth. Working with children with special needs would be an asset. A strong candidate would also have experience in retail sales, experience with Office products (Word and Excel) and a desire to gain skills in merchandising and inventory curation.

Important note: This position is dependent on government funding. Funding decisions are being made at the end of March.

To be eligible for a job through Young Canada Works, youth must:
• be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and
• have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
Note: International students are not eligible participants. As the objective of the CSJ program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student's time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
The Cultural Program & Gift Shop Assistant will work closely with the Education Coordinator and the Director/Curator, as well as the Gift Shop Manager. The Education Coordinator will devote the first week of employment to workplace orientation and training in research, content, and organization of the program in the mornings, and the Gift Shop Manager will orientate the candidate in the afternoon to shop specific training.
The Cultural Program & Gift Shop Assistant will then, following the above orientation, assist with contacting referral organizations, provide presentations to schools and referral organizations, plan and deliver programs, purchase supplies under the direct supervision of the Education Coordinator – all in consultation with the Director/Curator. In the afternoons, this position will assist in the Gift Shop, focusing on customer service, sales, merchandising and inventory. The Operations Coordinator will oversee their hiring and HR procedures, orientation to payroll and create the candidate profile in Sage.
The museum and our gallery fulfills its responsibilities under the occupational health and safety act, 1993. An orientation meeting will be held on the first day of work, providing information, training, safety, procedures, and associated risks with regard to the position. Such information will be provided as: who to report to, with regard to accidents or harassment, procedures, and equipment to deal with emergencies, and where to find first aid materials.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- To become knowledgeable about the MJM&AG, its exhibitions and programs, in order to engage in this programming and share this information with participants and the public as necessary.
-In the mornings, the Culture Program Assistant will bring awareness of art and culture to the children & youth of Moose Jaw through their participation in the Summer Art & Culture Camp, regardless of financial limitations of the participants.
-To provide art education to children in the community through this program, including a blend of art activities such as drawing and painting, clay, cartooning, papier mache, sculpture and multi-cultural components.
-To help children & youth explore their own creativity by working with various art materials and through contact with visiting artists and museum exhibits.
-To assist with the delivery of the program, including set-up and clean up, as required under the supervision of the Education Coordinator.
-To assist with the contact to referral organizations to identify children and teens, especially those at risk, to participate in the Summer Art & Culture Camps and Teen Workshops.
In the afternoons, the Shop Assistant will learn about the administration required for sales and record keeping in the Art Museum Gift Shop. Tasks will be as following:
-To order supplies and merchandise for the shop as well as contact consignors about replenishing stock at the shop.
-To update inventory records as new merchandise is consigned or sold.
-To create visually appealing displays from merchandise and consigned hand-made items.
-To perform housekeeping duties including vacuuming, dusting, cleaning glass fixtures and other task to maintain the cleanliness of the gift shop.
-To open and close the Art Museum Gift Shop on time and perform administrative duties as required.
-To promote and market the activities of the MJM&AG as well as understanding the mandate and policies of the MJM&AG and Gift Shop.
-To assist with the annual ParkArt Fundraiser on the July 1 STAT holiday.
-Assisting in the management and distribution of program surveys to caregivers and children.
Employment Period: May 4, 2026 through August 22, 2026
Number of Weeks: 16 (Tuesday through Saturday)
Hours/Week: 35
Rate/Hour: $16.00/hour plus vacation pay (paid out)
