Betsy Rosenwald: To Understanding, Through Understanding

This exhibition showcases new drawings and paintings by Betsy Rosenwald from her 2025 residency at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada. To Understanding, Through Understanding explores the complex identities shaped by centuries of migration, settlement, cultural exchange, and conflict in Ukraine and its neighbouring regions.

Rosenwald, who grew up identifying as “Russian Jewish,” was inspired by the 2022 escalation of russia’s invasion to trace her family’s roots to the Ukrainian cities of Lviv, Belz, and Bila Tserkva. Engaging with the Museum’s staff and collections, she explored the histories of these regions and the Jewish communities within them.

Her work weaves personal and regional histories, reflecting on how family stories intersect with Ukraine’s turbulent past and influence contemporary identity. By situating her family’s migration within this larger history, Rosenwald invites visitors to consider the resilience of cultural memory and the forces that shape who we are and where we come from.
