Karlie King: Galactic Cannibalism
One of the most transformative experiences of my life came about during an Artist Residency in Cypress Hills. On nights when the Observatory was open and the sky was clear I would go and look through the telescope and visit with the resident astronomer. He showed me some pretty amazing celestial things–like Saturn–so clearly I could see the rings, the moons of Jupiter, nebulas, and star clusters. But the phenomena that captured my mind, and forever changed my perspective, was the night he turned the telescope to, as he called it, “a galaxy eating another galaxy”. Not just a singular galaxy (which would have been more than impressive enough), but I got to witness the event of Galactic Cannibalism.
This body of artwork references this experience. It is a play on words - having the plate (which literally references consumption or eating) represent various celestial phenomena–whether it be a planet, or a nebula … or a galaxy.
