Hardanger Embroidery is a traditional Norwegian needlework craft. It is thought to have originated in the Middle East and spread to Europe and in particular Italy. The Norwegians learned of it on their seafaring journeys and, being sheep farmers with raw material of wool and linen, developed the craft. The immigrants brought it to North America. It has recently gained in popularity here as a beautiful traditional art.
