SCAA Archival Accessibility Awareness Workshop

This two-hour workshop is a collaborative presentation and roundtable discussion on archival accessibility awareness. So really thinking about how we can make archives, and the field itself, more accessible for people with disabilities, a chronic illness, or are neurodivergent. Michael shares some of his own experiences as a person with epilepsy who has a decade of experience working in and with archives. Michael will outline his dissertation that addresses accessibility gaps in graduate level archival education as a lot of it contains first-hand accounts of accessibility gaps from those that work in the field. He defines some concepts that are currently guiding archival accessibility work. This workshop is not meant to be academic in nature. The main point of the workshop is meant to be highly collaborative.
The bulk of the workshop is centered around themes of programming, collections processing, accessible physical/digital spaces, training, and equitable hiring practices. Time is given to each section, but we can determine the length based on the interests of the participants. Resources are also shared with the participants. A lot of current archival accessibility work is targeted at user accessibility, but this workshop presents it in a way that also benefits everyone from staff, volunteers, students, interns, and more.
