Sâkêwêwak First Nations Artists' Collective is seeking a new Director to lead the organization in this period of renewal. Sâkêwêwak was named by Joseph Naytowhow and is translated to "they are emerging". As we enter 2021 and look to reimagine our future within the greater community of Indigenous artists from all over the world; we are seeking a proven community builder, visionary individual.


Director Position at Sâkêwêwak First Nations Artists’ Collective

Reporting to the Board of Directors (BOD), the Administrative Director (Director) will help create a new vision and mission for Sâkêwêwak (SAC). This person will need to communicate and be a part of the regional and national arts community; direct additional staff members, including an administrative assistant, Artistic Programmer, and any further term or contract positions (as required). The Director will also be responsible for the planning of our Annual Storytellers Festival, including developing and maintaining relationships with our partners and funders.

The Director will work within the mandate established by the Board. Sâkêwêwak has a volunteer board of directors elected from the voting membership. The Director is responsible for working with the Board to carry out Sâkêwêwak's vision, goals, and needs.

The Director oversees the administrative, fiscal, and membership development functions of the organization, and will take the initiative on revisioning a multi-year plan that includes strengthening relationships within our community, expanding membership, securing funding, and outlining our programming plan.

Sâkêwêwak understands that the need to work remotely has increased in the past year. The organization will consider non-local applicants who can commit to undertaking the Director's entire workload from a distance supplemented with clear communication and regular meetings to ensure accountability.

The Director is a permanent position; thus, relocation to Regina will be necessary for the future. Successful leadership of Sâkêwêwak's depends upon creating meaningful relationships with the communities the organization serves, understanding the arts community and artistic composition of Southern Saskatchewan and familiarity with the area's cultures.

Duties of the Administrative Director:

Fiscal Management.

The Director’s main accountability as delegated by the BOD is the overall fiscal management of the organization:

The Director will produce an annual budget for approval by the BOD.

The Director ensures that financial reporting is accurate and timely, and reports directly to the Board and funders on the organization’s overall fiscal matters.

The Director holds key accountability for programming and budgets and will work collaboratively with artistic staff to develop programming budgets with special emphasis for our Annual Storytellers Festival, schedule activities and to realize deferred and uncompleted projects.

Experience with Grant Writing and Reporting is an asset. Our Organization is run through funding via several established partners. Ability to cultivate communicative, mutually-beneficial, and supportive relationships with funders and partners.


Membership Engagement and Development

The Director leads the organization in membership engagement and development activities.

The Director demonstrates leadership in designing, developing and implementing strategies to engage with the current membership while also cultivating new members ( inviting artists, curators and art supporters from all communities to actively engage and participate with SAC.)

The Director’s approach to membership development is collaborative, anti-racist and committed to philosophies & strategies of diversity and inclusion. SAC’s mandate is to support Indigenous artists while welcoming all people to enjoy, support and engage with Indigenous arts, as members, informed viewers and creators.

The Director actively consults with the BOD and Artistic Programmer in shaping the vision for membership growth and development.

The Director seeks out ways to actively engage in meaningful dialogue with key stakeholders from local, provincial and national arts communities, and remain active in the Indigenous Arts community.

The Director will consider new membership participation possibilities, including members shows, or workshop opportunities.

Grant Writing

The Director is responsible for the creation and submission of key grants for municipal, provincial, and federal funding with the approval of the BOD. We have a core operating grant that requires the development of multi-year programming that includes our Festival and exhibitions.

Fundraising

The Director will lead the organization in collaboration with the BOD in actively seeking out and creating opportunities for fund development outside of key municipal, provincial, federal grants.

Communications and Promotion


The Director will be responsible for communications with stakeholders, funders and the local and greater art communities

The Director will take on or delegate promotional strategies for the organization


Day to Day Operations


Day to day operations, including answering emails and requests for information, regular fiscal obligations (paying bills), coordinating staff, etc

Managing the physical offices and space including liaisoning with building management and staff.

Staffing events, recruiting and coordinating volunteers for events and other public activities as needed. Attending events when possible.

Other duties as required


Hours of Work

The Director position is based on an approximate 30-hour work week. The job requires after-hour availability for events, set ups, take downs, etc that may require flexibility of schedule. Attending board meetings, advising committees and other communications with the board, as needed, may require the Director to exercise flexibility with their working hours.


Competencies


Long term goal setting and organizational skills;

Ability to work and communicate collaboratively with fellow Staff, Volunteers, and Board Members;

Working knowledge of Indigenous artists, and artistic or cultural communities. Familiarity with other arts organizations, regional and national an asset.

Management and administration skills, including oral and written communication and financial management;

2-4 years experience working or volunteering with artist-run-centres, galleries, and/or non-profit organizations;

Festival / event management or planning experience;

Degree in fine arts, art history, arts administration, or equivalent experience;

Knowledge and respect for diverse points of view and the ability to facilitate productive exchange;

Flexibility in unexpected situations;

Strong communication skills;

Enthusiasm for community engagement and community building;

Office skills including file management, Digital meeting and planning software, MS office software, and web tools for group emailing, website updating, and social media etc as needed.

Compensation:


Base salary set at $55,000.
