Join our dynamic team as the Properties Master for our upcoming Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival. This exciting role involves overseeing the props department and supporting the building and maintenance of the Set Designer's vision for the production's properties. 

Reporting to the Production Manager the Properties Master will ensure the seamless execution of all props-related aspects throughout the summer performance season. While under contract the duties will include, but won’t be limited to working with designers, liaising with relevant departments to ensure communication of production needs, sourcing materials, overseeing and coordinating the management of the props, its equipment, supplies and inventory. Designs will be approved before the contract starts with the intent to rent or use company assets appropriate for the shows.  

This is a seasonal contract position starting May 28th, 2024 and ending on July 13th, 2024 The successful candidate should be able to work independently under pressure and collaboratively and lead in a team environment. 

ABOUT YOU

The ideal candidate will be able to identify capabilities in each of the following areas:

Prop Design and Execution: 

- Source, acquire, or create all props needed for productions, ensuring they align with the artistic vision of the project. 

- Work closely with the art department to ensure seamless integration of props into set design. 

- Awareness of safety regulations and protocols related to the use of props, ensuring a secure environment for the cast and crew. 

- Understanding of materials, construction techniques, and relevant software/tools used in prop design and management. 

Budget and Time Management: 

- Proficiency in managing budgets for props, including cost estimation, negotiation, and tracking expenses to ensure financial efficiency. 

- Efficient time management skills to meet tight production schedules and deadlines. 

Problem-Solving: 

- Solutions to support backstage crew to address any issues that may arise with props during live performances 

- Keen eye for detail to ensure accuracy and authenticity in selecting and placing props, considering historical periods, styles, and cultural contexts. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

Build period (May 28th – July 5th) 

Identify and budget prop requirements 

Research and sourcing (rentals, borrows, online shopping etc) 

Set up shopping/pull schedule with designer 

Performing modifications on props from rental or company inventories 

Building properties 

Set up a schedule with stage management to incorporate props into rehearsal periods 

Manage purchasing and expense reconciliations 



Tech Week/Opening week (Hamlet: July 5th &/Undone: July 13th) 

Available for q-2-q, tech dress, first dress rehearsal, and previews 

Create paperwork (storage plot, maintenance) 

Have all properties available for Q-2-Q, tech dress, etc 

Provide a maintenance list for performance run 

Address notes during tech period

Our festival has been a staple of summer in Saskatoon since 1985, attracting over 10,000 visitors annually. Rate of pay $21.01/hour

Qualifications: 

Willingness to stay informed about industry trends, new materials, and techniques related to prop design, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. 

Experience and ability to build properties. 

A broad range of experience and knowledge in all aspects of theatrical Production techniques 

Knowledge and experience in textile construction techniques 

Must have strong time management, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills 

Proficient computer knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and internet research 

A valid driver’s license
