Job Description
Globe Theatre is looking for a collaborative, detail-oriented, and technically skilled individual to join our team as Head of Sound on a full-time seasonal basis. Reporting to the Technical Director and Director of Production, the Head of Sound is responsible for the coordination and execution of all sound and video elements for Globe Theatre mainstage productions.
This role is ideal for someone with proven experience in sound programming, mixing, and operation in a professional theatre environment. We’re looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, team-based setting, who values high standards, and who brings humour and flexibility to the job.
Key Responsibilities
• Collaborate with designers and the production team to bring artistic visions to life;
• Work with the production team to ensure that all sound and video needs for productions are met while adhering to time, staffing, and budget requirements;
• Operate and program sound/video systems including QLab and Isadora;
• Mix live musicals with up to 20+ cast members on lav microphones with a full band or tracks for approximately one to two productions a season;
• Maintain and repair all sound/video and related equipment to be in good working order to avoid any loss of time during set-up, rehearsal, or performance, including the main stage sound system and communication systems (Clear com, assistive listening system, program sound);
• Maintain inventory, source materials, and recommend upgrades as needed;
• Supervise casual crew and oversee all sound/video installations and strikes;
• In conjunction with the Technical Director, research and provide recommendations and costing for any equipment upgrades or production specific purchases;
• Attend and participate in weekly production meetings and daily toolbox meetings as outlined in the production calendar;
• Using the budget tracking, petty cash, credit card, and purchase order systems to track, code, and submit invoices for all purchases in a timely manner;
• Develop and maintain the casual labor pool for Globe Theatre in conjunction with the production department;
• Record and edit pre-show chats with the Artistic Director or designate;
• Contribute to a safe, respectful, and collaborative workplace culture;
• Other duties as assigned by the Technical Director/ Director of Production.
Qualifications & Experience
• Strong knowledge of digital consoles, specifically Digico
• Strong working knowledge of sound and video technologies; knowledge of QLab and Isadora an asset
• Strong knowledge of current live recording, mixing and editing techniques.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair cables and connectors; soldering an asset
• Excellent leadership, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
• Ability to work at heights
• Ability to remain calm and adaptable in a busy and creative environment.
• Familiarity with safe working practices.
• Valid driver’s license considered an asset.
Compensation & Details
• This is a full-time, seasonal position, generally employed from late August through June. For the 2025-2026 season, the Head of Sound dates will be as early as August 5, 2025 through Saturday, June 27, 2026. Start date is negotiable for the right candidate.
• This position falls under the Collective Agreement between Globe Theatre and IATSE 295. Wage structures, overtime rates, minimum work week hours, and yearly wage increases, etc. are determined by the Collective Agreement. The qualified candidate will be required to join IATSE 295 if they are not already a member.
• The wage for the 2025-2026 season will be $30.19 per hour, a minimum of 35 hours per week during seasonal engagement dates. Any overtime worked (more than 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week) it is paid at time and a half.
• Overtime, especially during tech week, should be expected. 6-day weeks during tech and show runs are the usual. Heavy evening and weekend work is required.
