SCAA Collections Care Tricks and Tips for Display, Handling & Storage
This session will provide archival staff and volunteers with practical instruction and training on display, storage and handling techniques. The final format of the workshop will be based on member needs and may include bug-proofing, creating simple supports for display, making enclosures for storage and encapsulation. Participants may ask to bring their own books and archival records.
Emphasis will be on finding low-cost approaches using commonly available materials and within everyone’s skill-set. By the end of the day, volunteers will have learned at least one usable preservation skill or hack.
Instruction will be a mix of lecture and demonstration. Four workstations will be set up, each corresponding to a different activity. Instruction and demonstrations will be given by the instructor at each station, and participants will be asked to demonstrate what the instructor has discussed and shown, with input from everyone else. Following instruction at each of the stations, participants will travel between different stations according to their needs and interest. The instructor will be on hand to comment, encourage and guide the participants.
