Berlin Janzen is one of Saskatoon's most active oboists. Her gorgeous sound, sensitive musicianship, and ability to collaborate make her one of Saskatoon's most sought-after musicians.
Berlin is the principal oboist with the Saskatoon Concert Band. She is active as a guest soloist in the community and performs regularly in the pit orchestra of the Saskatoon Summer Players
shows. She has also performed with both the Saskatoon Symphony and Regina Symphony Orchestras. She is a member of several other ensembles in Saskatoon including the Riperian
Winds and the North Saskatchewan Wind Symphony and is active as a guest soloist throughout the community for various causes and events. She was a featured soloist with the Saskatoon
Philharmonic Orchestra during their 2017-2018 season, performing Vincenzo Bellini's Concerto for Oboe.
Berlin received her Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Saskatchewan. Her love of the oboe has given her the opportunity to continue her studies and perform in Germany and
extensively in Victoria, British Columbia. She started playing the oboe in Grade 6 Band and has been playing ever since.
The Penadés-Fasanar Concerto for Oboe and Wind Band is a new and exciting work for oboe and this performance is the North American premiere. according to Berlin, “The piece reminds
me of a film score with its lyrical, lush, and warm melodies contrasted with exciting action sequences. You can paint a picture in your mind based on what you are hearing; there are so
many different characters which makes this piece both heartfelt and suspenseful at the same time! The thrilling sections are dazzling and will keep you on the edge of your seat, while the
lush, melancholic sections are warm and reflective, yet dark and mysterious”.
The Saskatoon Concert Band is Saskatoon’s premiere community concert band. It is an inclusive performance group and has been performing in Saskatoon and area for over 70 years. The
group performs a wide range of music; orchestral transcriptions, original wind literature, light classics, marches, and Broadway show tunes.
